THEN YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE HERE YOU RACIST ASS. AND IF YOU WERE, YOU'D BE SITTING BY A FIRE NEAR A TEEPEE. BE THANKFUL TO THOSE WHITIES THAT YOU HAVE YOUR ESCALADE AND A LONESTAR CARD.

The irony is that the point of the cartoon is lost in two equally Racist comments: or maybe it is proven by them.

In order to escape oppression and seek opportunity the Europeans came to the New World. Because they came new cultures were born, some were destroyed. It is suppose to make you think, not hate even more.

BY A FIRE NEAR A TEEPEE?

I really dont think thats the right description. Native Americans have been doing extremely quite the opposite these days. They arent by a fire near a teepee, rather they're ON FIRE with CASINOS (on fire meaning doing pretty good) doing great economically. They have there own lands, laws, etc. Now as for whites, well the picture is only depicting Pilgrims imigrating to the NEW WORLD so to speak, now isn't everyone immigrating to these parts some sort of imigrant? That being said, pilgrims had no PAPERS is the IRONY OF THE PIC hence the birth of the acronym commonly used to describe Italians in the 1800's imigrating to this country without papers (W.O.P.)

I think the correct interpretation is that if they had built a wall back then, a great nation would not have been built. If we put up a wall now, we may miss out on great things.

Maybe Eddie Saenz can get a cut of the action.

We can't escape Eddie and Aaron not matter how off subject the post?

OK let me guess, one of them is going to build the wall the other is going to tear it down.

No wait one of them was beating it and the other one drove into it after a party.

Shane, a question:

Why does your blog require a membership to comment? (this is not a complaint..just a question) I can see some of the pros and cons, but I want to know your reasons) Sorry for the off message PR.

DAC,

My ultimate goal is to elevate the Rio Grande Valley, not mire it down with trash talk. If our leaders are trying to bring manufacturers, investors, or other great things to the RGV, I want the research on the web to show great things about our region.

This is why membership is required. This does not prevent anybody from commenting anonymously. It is easy to get an email address under a pseudonym. In fact, my RGVNewMedia.org site has some anonymous bloggers as members. I want debate, not trash talk. Requiring membership allows me to boot people who get out of hand. I can accept disagreement; I just don't want blind hatred to have a place in Rio Grande Valley discourse.

I'd be glad to have you comment on RGV-Life.com, just use an email address for your alter-ego to protect your anonymity.

Shaine

Here is an article that shows the image I don't want of the RGV. You would think that we all live out amongst our farms and shacks down here. The image is that we are just a bunch of colonias with no industry other than mooching off the government. We need to be mindful of the image that is portrayed of the RGV.

Anonymous mudslingers add to the low esteem that the rest of the nation has for us. This is why membership is necessary to RGV Life. If you want to speak your mind, stand by it; even if it's with a pseudonym. I don't need to know your true identity. I simply want to weed out the comment ninjas, who sneak in, assassinate, and sneak out anonymously.

I disagree with the article. I think that the article was great. I think that the line about stucco bungalows and weed covered farm lots may have been over the top, but the article was about a self made millionaire who is making a difference.

The fact is that the candidates from both sides have pretty much both sides write off this area.

The Republicans because they can and have taken the state without the regional vote. And the Democrats because the regional vote means so little in the larger picture. We may see a view of the Democratic Candidates when the primary approaches if there is still a gap to close in the primary, but otherwise the Valley is not the hot spot.

I know we would like a shiny image of the Valley, but even in Austin, they have figured they can divide and conquer us and then treat us like a region when it comes to appropriation. While the Valley has come a long way since I moved here and becomes more metropolitan all the time, it is not an area of prosperity relative to a lot of similarly populated areas in the State or Country.

You should look at our regional stats for poverty, lack of health insurance, drop out rates, teen pregnancy, gang and drug violence...we have some work to do.

Well as an optimist, I share your opinion Shaine about the wall preventing progress if immigrants had not been allowed. However, the realist in me, says the picture has several interpretations based on life experiences. The cynic in me states this from the depiction is a pilgrim(whites) coming to America. Real American buidling wall in the picture. Now, let us ponder something. First settlers come in, Indians accept them after some time and show them(whites) how to live off the land otherwise they would starve and die. Settlers(whites) do not want to pay taxes, etc. to motherland(British rule). If the Indians had not shown them their ways and the landscape do you think the battle would have been a success for them during their fight for independence. I bet not, the Real American(native american) made a huge an ultimately great sacrifice by helping the white settlers, not once, but twice, remember what the Navajos did for them. Now let us see how they were re-paid for their great contribution to the success for Independence; many native americans were killed. The native american was raped, pillaged, and enslaved. Their lands taken away, their horses almost killed to the point of extinction, their identity as they knew it re-created. They were not allowed to speak the National Language,"NATIVE AMERICAN". They were tortured and sometimes killed for practicing their cultural and ceremonial practices. So yes, immigration did bring about progress, but at what cost. The individual that was offended by the comment someone made regarding keeping the white people out, Well don't feel bad, we are all not that tolerant of whites and he was being nice, that is typical mexican-american hospitality, we are very accepting sort of like the native americans. So whitey excuse me if I do not share your remark in large CAPS. Unlike that poster, I am not tolerant, must be the Apache in me, at least that is what my mother tells me and you can make any reference you want to my mother it will not offend me, because it is expected. I have had my fair share of some ASS setting up temporary residence here (Valley) telling me how rude it is to speak my native language. Well guess what, GO HOME STRANGER! I will not submit like the native Americans, and if you do not like it do not move to the Valley, while most of my ethnic brothers may be tolerant there are many of us that are not. To those of you that setup permanent residence from back in the day of the Land Wars or land grants from the battle of the Alamo
don't complain when US Flag, Texas flag, and Mexican flag are raised. It is our right, don't like it well you know where the door is. I, as well as many of my ethnic brothers do not live off your seasonal contributions and don't need them. Shaine like I stated depending on your life experiences you will see a different view sort of like a kaleidescope. The Valley is unique, some of us for the most part tolerate stupid remarks to speak English only! I of course am not one of them, and that group is growing as tolerance is taking a back seat. There is the right way and the wrong way to immigrate. I guess our ethnicity is singled out moreover any other ethnicity because we do it illegally. However, we don't bring in bombs or fly planes into buildings. The honest, humble ones are trying to make a living. They get a bad wrap because of the drug and human trafficking the others are conducting, however, this has been going on since the land wars or bandit wars.

Ponder this taught! How safe do you think the Valley is? Understand the landscape has changed. Most Valley residents go about their lives with blinders. However here it goes, Just as there are terrorist cells around the world including the US. The Valley has its share of other types of cells operating here. You do not know if he/she is your neighbor, or the person sitting next to you in a restaurant. However, let me clue you in there is a hidden society that numbers in the thousands. They commit crimes, such as murder, assassinations, home invasions, pseudo cop invasions, armed robbery, burglary, drug trafficking, human smuggling.
They are disparate organizations that have a military structure, some have infiltrated in across the Border and are trained assassins who once protected the ex-President Salinas. I welcome the day that a "standing kill order" is issued to take those particular cells out before it becomes a problem and the bickering of my skin color or language will take a back seat to the larger problem at hand here in the Valley. The re-districting of the State of Texas by Republicans has altered and weakened our vote regarding those who represent us in Texas legislature which is where it counts for the Valley. I welcome the Texas senate being reverted back to a democratic majority so that the lines can be redrawn back the way they were. I am not a party voter and am sad when I have to do it. I would rather vote split ticket because I am not a conformists.

Great blog, keep up the dialog!

While I don't disagree with some of what you say, I think it is unfair to depict the downfall of the native americans the way you do concentrating on the English Settlers. All of Europe was looking for a way to use the New World, England, France and of course Spain, for some of us the most important by product of the Spanish Exploration/Invasion/Explotation was us, but there were other by products as negative as you paint and some that endure that continue to affect all of us and many other in the Hemisphere.
